Data-Driven Outsole Stud Design for Spikeless Golf Shoes

Developed a spikeless golf shoe called the 'Descente Golf R90' under the supervision of Mario Lafortune, the former director of the Nike Sport Research Laboratory and Nike Golf in Beaverton, OR, USA. The shoe, patented in Korea, has enjoyed significant success in the industry, leading to a rapid increase in market share for golf shoes in Korea since its launch in 2020. In designing the outsole stud of the golf shoe, we examined the direction of the horizontal ground reaction force to determine the optimal shape of the stud and analyzed foot pressure to establish the best placement for the studs. This analysis focused on the maximum linear and rotational coefficients of friction occurring during a golf swing. Consequently, we could significantly improve both ball distance and direction (KR Patent, 2021).
