A new type of real-world motion capture system via biomechanics-powered wearable bioelectronics to help everyone at all health levels achieve higher performance and relieve musculoskeletal pain
Welcome to the website of Sung Eun Kim PhD
MY MISSION
With the aging population on the rise, there is growing interest in alternative medicine, particularly in the role of exercise. In the meantime, my research focuses on achieving higher performance and relieving musculoskeletal pain to enhance the enjoyment of physical activities, ultimately contributing to healthier and longer lives. Specifically, my research areas are mainly to support the development of a new type of real-world motion capture tool via wearable bioelectronics and to lead the creation of biomechanics-based AI models that can prescribe, monitor, and alert to promote efficient and healthier movements. The potential applications of this research include gait rehabilitation, hand rehabilitation, sports rehabilitation, sports coaching, smart apparel, smart gloves, and smart footwear.
RECENT PROJECTS
Software
Discover biomechanical factors associated with hand and wrist movement performance to add intelligence of prescribing personalized postural modifications into the state-of-the-art technologies (in preparation).
Hardware
Develop 3D real-world motion capture platforms through 1) IMU sensors to measure rotational biomechanics for sports coaching (DOI/Journal Link), 2) structural vibration sensors to detect abnormal gait patterns for elderly care (DOI/Journal Link, DOI/Journal Link), 3) 3D coordinate system reconstruction computer vision (OpenCap) to measure complex and rapid movements for sports coaching (under review) and 4) electronic skin (E-skin) to measure thumb motions for developing a new motion capture tool.
